Brainstorming begins by Suprima Bhele

So far, we had seen the site, went around the area, and discussed about what a participatory placemaking is. The next step was to implement our learning into further action and that was to achieve a collective vision for the future. Hence with that goal in mind, we did a class activity. This activity was a small scale version of the activity that was done later by the Borgo Bello Association. We all got some sticky notes and imagined the site in the year 2020. In a few words, we wrote the thoughts that came to our mind. Later, when we had the first community workshop, the community members did the same activity. I was astounded to see how the vision from the workshop that had 25-30 people in it and the vision from our class that had 12 students in it, were so similar to each other.

Our class had a vision of a welcoming, relaxing, multi-functional, inclusive place that would be equipped with both artificial and natural elements. Many ideas were suggested on how to achieve this vision, from organizing local art shows and open mics to having weekend farmers market and food court. The panoramic view of the site is the main attraction of the site. Hence, most of the ideas were focused around that feature. The suggestions included placement of benches, areas for yoga and meditation, building a timeline of the city, and many more.

Community Workshop 1Now, the next important step lies ahead us, and that is to mold the results of this brainstorming session into a plan that we can shape into a real place. We have gathered great ideas and I hope that we will be able to incorporate the most practical, beneficial and suitable idea around the themes that are valued most by the community. The goal is to turn the site into a place that helps the community grow rather than turning it into a burdensome experiment. We will be planning further in the next few classes, and helping the community campaign to build the Via Del Cortone Terrace.
